Military residency in Family Practice at Eisenhower Army Medical Center with board certification in Family Medicine 1983, with recurrent regular board certification

Subsequent military family care at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, and later at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville AL, increased his experience after his residency. After an honorable discharge from the Army Medical Corps in 1987, he built a Family Medicine clinic in Huntsville.

He was the first family physician to use stress tests prior to cardiology evaluation in Huntsville; he was the first family physician to develop in-office screening for osteoporosis with DEXA testing. He has spoken on multiple occasions on TV on various medical topics. He has continued his Emergency Room experiences during the last 30 years.

Wound care training was obtained through Healogics, which trained him in a military mode to care for chronic wounds.

Dr. Welker is the primary physician in a Pain Management and Family clinic in Huntsville. Aggressive monthly follow up with each patient is accomplished, with review of needed medications, or procedures, according to current national and state guidelines.

Has had experience in working with prescribing controlled medical substances, and the legal responsibilities surrounding this in chronic and acute pain control.
