Dr. Guttman is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Guttman is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Additionally, Dr. Guttman holds a Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound (AEMUS) from ABEM.
Dr. Guttman completed medical school and an Emergency Medicine residency at McGill University as well as an Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He recently completed a 5-year tenure as the AEMUS Fellowship director. Dr. Guttman has over 10 years experience in academic emergency medicine. He has worked at urban academic sites as well as busy community emergency departments. He is currently licensed in Georgia and has an inactive New York State license.
Dr. Guttman has provided opinions in various medical malpractice cases within emergency medicine. In addition, Dr. Guttman has specialized expertise point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
Dr. Guttman is a nationally recognized expert in POCUS. He has served on the board of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) Emergency Ultrasound Section (EUS) for several years, including as a member at large and education chair. He is currently the chair-elect for the section. Dr. Guttman also serves as the chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Ultrasound section coding and reimbursement committee where he is consulted on POCUS related operations and reimbursement queries from around the country.
Dr. Guttman is a nationally recognized expert in both Emergency Medicine and POCUS education. He has given over 65 lectures and workshops on the national and international stage, both at CME courses and national conferences. These include the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM), Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), Coastal Emergency Medicine Conference, and the Rocky Mountain Winter Conference, among others. During the COVID pandemic, he founded the ongoing “Unmute Your Probe” virtual ultrasound course series, a highly popular monthly series of lectures on POCUS, hosted by AAEM. Dr. Guttman serves as a council member for the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC). Dr. Guttman has run CME POCUS courses for a variety of specialties, including emergency medicine, hospital medicine, general and trauma surgery, anesthesia, family medicine and neurology.

While Dr. Guttman is a POCUS expert, his influence in emergency medicine extends beyond POCUS. He is an author of multiple publications and book chapters on emergency medicine, including on topics such as Inflammatory bowel disease and pulmonary embolism. He has been an author on the Nausea and Vomiting chapter in the last 2 editions of Rosen’s Emergency Medicine, the preeminent reference textbook in Emergency Medicine.
