Dr. Leigh Ann Cates-McGlinn’s academic qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston, Texas. A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC- with preparation to function as an NNP. She also holds an Associates in Applied Science (AAS) – Nursing and Respiratory Care each from Odessa College in Odessa, Texas.

She maintains national certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP-BC) and is recognized by the Arizona Board of Nurse Examiners as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN). In addition, she retains certification as a registered respiratory therapist (RRT) and holds a subspecialty certification in pediatric and neonatal respiratory care (NPS).

Dr. Cates-McGlinn is trained as a simulation specialist at Stanford University’s Center for Advanced Pediatric Education (CAPE) in 2009 and Harvard’s Institute for Medical Simulation. In addition, Dr. McGlinn is certified as a healthcare simulation educator (CHSE).

She has over 30 years of total bedside experience as a registered nurse and respiratory therapist in home health, general and adult, pediatric, and neonatal critical care nursing. Of those, over 17 years are as a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP). She remains clinically current at Flagstaff Medical Center.

Dr. Cates-McGlinn has served as Assistant Professor with Baylor College of Medicine in Department of Pediatrics in the section of Neonatology. She has also been faculty as an Associate Professor at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), East Carolina University and Old Dominion University in their NNP Programs. Furthermore, Dr. McGlinn is the owner and director of McGlinn Institute- Neonatal (www.McglinnInstitute.com) which specializes in neonatal education, skills, and simulation.

Her academic interests include healthcare competency evaluation, simulation-based training, neonatal ECMO and respiratory modalities, and legal case review. She is recently published and serves as a reviewer for multiple healthcare journals. Dr. McGlinn has also presented on multiple levels from local to international.
