He has performed human factors and ergonomic studies for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Department of Defense/US Navy. He has conducted hundreds of industrial ergonomic assessments and thousands of office ergonomic assessments. He has performed return to work studies for the construction and telecommunication industries. He worked as a safety engineer in the chemical industry. He analyzed accidents in the chemical, avaiation and nuclear industries. He has written expert opinion reports for ergonomic issues, a fireplace explosion, a human factors related case and a workplace design issue.

He is a full professor, with numerous journal articles and conference proceedings. He has been invited to speak at numerous conferences and symposia. He has authored/co-authored four books. The most recent was: Ostrom, L.T., and Wilhelmsen, C.A., Risk Assessment Tools and Techniques and
Their Application, John Wiley and Sons; second Edition, Published July 30, 2019 .
He also has two fire protection certifications – Certified Fire Inspector, Level 1 and a Certified Fire Plan Examiner. He was a radiation safety officer and a certified competent fall protection specialist. He is a private pilot. He is also a Certified Technology Manager.
